More Than Building Websites

Advantage Web didn’t begin with WordPress, website themes or online marketing.

My career began in the early days of personal computing, long before websites became part of everyday business. At university I was writing software, experimenting with operating systems, developing architectural applications and learning how computers solved real-world problems.

That foundation led into decades of work across enterprise computing, Unix and Linux systems, networking, software architecture, disaster recovery, data centres and large corporate projects.

Websites eventually became one part of that journey—not the beginning of it.

Learning From Many Industries

Over the years I’ve worked with organisations ranging from architects and libraries to banks, transport, logistics, telecommunications, manufacturing, insurance and aviation.

Every industry approaches technology a little differently. Some value careful planning, others move quickly. Some build systems that last for decades, while others struggle with short-term decisions.

Seeing those differences taught me that good technology isn’t simply about software. It’s about understanding the people who use it, the risks behind it and how decisions made today affect a business years into the future.

Seeing technology behind the scenes

One advantage of working across so many different environments is that you begin to see the patterns.

Over the years I’ve seen successful projects, difficult projects, and projects that should never have been started in the first place. I’ve worked through hardware failures, software defects, security incidents, disaster recovery situations and systems that became far more complicated than they needed to be – stresses for staff, designers, and end users. I am proud to say I have never lost a system and have recovered what seemed impossible disaster recovery builds.

I’ve also worked alongside some exceptionally capable people—engineers, lab developers, analysts, project managers and support staff who approached problems methodically and professionally. They reinforced the value of clear communication, careful planning and understanding the people behind the technology. In this environment everyone supports each other with transparency as opposed to hiding and blaming others, an environment encouraged by mentoring, raising the bar as we say, and access to secure documents and data that other companies may not have.

Those experiences continue to influence the way I approach websites today. Good websites aren’t simply attractive pages. They’re systems that should be reliable, secure, well organised and straightforward to maintain. When they’re designed thoughtfully, they quietly support a business without becoming a constant source of frustration.

Why I enjoy working with AWS

Technology continues to evolve, which is one of the reasons I still enjoy working in this field. I was fortunate to be in that sudden transition time away from mainframe engineering, punch cards and robotic magnetic storage silos, rather, the time of Unix and fast commercial chip sets for the time.

Since 2010, I focused much of my attention on Amazon Web Services (AWS), Linux hosting and modern web infrastructure, the components we need to run on what we call virtual private servers. Rather than simply making websites work, I enjoy understanding the layers beneath them—security, backups, email delivery, monitoring, performance and disaster recovery.

That interest has led me to spend considerable time refining hosting environments, strengthening security and learning from real-world situations and other people’s experiences, where systems have failed or been compromised. Every challenge has reinforced the importance of careful planning rather than relying on quick fixes.

The technology will continue to change, and that’s part of the attraction. There is always something new to learn, and every improvement helps create websites that are more dependable for the people who rely on them.

Working with people today

These days I deliberately keep Advantage Web small so I can give personal on-going attention to my clients.

Most of my work comes through referrals, existing clients or professional relationships built over many years. I enjoy working with people who value honest advice, practical solutions and long-term reliability rather than unnecessary complexity.

Whether I’m helping with a new website, improving an existing hosting environment or resolving a technical problem, my goal is much the same as it has always been – to leave things better than I found them.

Technology doesn’t need to be confusing. When it’s planned carefully and supported well, it simply becomes another tool that helps people get on with running their business. My work is available for hosting platforms within the means of individuals, small business, and sole traders. Any proposed projects are discussed in terms of suitability and scope, and whether we take advantage of a development site or move straight into a live site.
