Moving Your Website from cPanel to AWS

Many businesses eventually outgrow traditional cPanel hosting and choose to move to Amazon Web Services (AWS) for greater performance, reliability and flexibility.

Every migration is a little different, but the overall process is straightforward and carefully planned to minimise disruption.

Planning the Migration

Before any work begins, we review your current website, hosting, domain name, DNS settings and email services. We also discuss the best migration approach for your particular situation.

If required, we’ll typically need access to your hosting account, domain registrar, DNS management and email provider.

Building Your New Server

A new Linux server is built and configured specifically for your website.

Rather than simply copying files across, the new environment is prepared with security, backups, monitoring and software updates already in place, providing a solid foundation for the future.

Moving Your Website

Your website files and database are transferred to the new server and thoroughly tested before your domain name is redirected. We usually assign a subdomain for testing, such as dev.YOURDOMAIN.com.au.

Once everything is working correctly, your DNS records are updated so visitors begin using the new server. After you’ve confirmed everything is operating as expected, your previous hosting account can be cancelled.

Email Considerations

Email often requires the most planning during a migration.

Whether you’re using cPanel email, Microsoft 365, Google Workspace or another provider, we’ll recommend the most appropriate approach to ensure your email continues working correctly.

We’ll also verify that important email security records, such as SPF, DKIM and DMARC, are configured correctly where applicable.

SSL Certificates

Your website will be configured with an SSL certificate so visitors can securely access your site using HTTPS. Most websites are well suited to free certificates that renew automatically.

Ongoing Security and Maintenance

Once your website is running on AWS, we continue to monitor and maintain the server. Depending on your requirements, this can include software updates, backups, security hardening, monitoring and general system maintenance.

AWS Billing

Your AWS account remains in your name, giving you complete ownership of your hosting environment.

AWS invoices you directly each month for the hosting service, while Advantage Web provides the management, maintenance and technical support that keeps your website running smoothly.
